1:30 t0 2:25 pm et Karli Taylor, PhD Fitting Fitness into Eating Disorder Recovery |
Can a fitness program be a part of an eating disorder recovery journey? When and how does exercise become safe for an eating disordered individual?
In order to answer these questions, it’s helpful to look at what it means to be recovered and or in recovery. It is important to note that just as no two people’s experience of living with an eating disorder is the same, recovery can also look quite different for everyone. However, it is generally accepted that to be in recovery from an eating disorder means that food and the physical appearance of the body take a more “normal” place in someone’s life. I put normal in quotes because there is such an emphasis on diet culture in today’s society that obsession with fitness and exercise has largely become socially acceptable. It may be easy for someone struggling with an eating disorder to get sucked into a fitness obsession thereby replacing one dangerous and unhealthy mindset with another. Does this mean that those striving to recover should not exercise? On the contrary, embracing a fit and healthy lifestyle is often helpful during the recovery process. Let’s talk about how to responsibly fit fitness into a recovery process. |
