Joel Matalon, founder of Joe Fitness World, has worked in the wellness sphere since 1989.
Joel’s vision to decrease the stressful faces and bodies he saw in NYC evolved from childhood stories he heard from his father and mother about the struggles of working life. His dad worked in Community Relations at the 92nd Street Y and his mother was a finance manager for real estate offices. He remembers fondly how his dad would clip newspaper articles to share with people about how to improve their opportunities for their businesses, relationships and personal health / well being. From a young age, he wanted the world to come together in harmony and peace through exercise and fitness (which wasn’t a term in the late 70’s). He saw fitness as a way to play and resolve issues, gain inner accomplishments and bring a sense of joy and calm. Eventually his business grew to include Life Coaching support. In the 90’s, he was a partner in several small fitness studios and grew to love meeting and working with people all around the world including South America, Europe and West Asia. where he taught fitness and racing (marathons, triathlons, and obstacle course races). Joel loves to stay knowledgeable with the latest fitness trends and business news by partnering and consulting with fitness industry leaders. He has been featured in the Daily News, ABC’s Eyewitness News, Rachel Ray Magazine, SportsLife NYC, Martha Stewart Whole Living Body, US News and World Report and Time Out NY. Joel is on the faculty of The American Council on Exercise and provides continuing education for fitness and health professionals. He has led lectures and trainings for corporations like ABC, ESPN, HBO and Adobe. He was the marathon coach/Creator of Team Lifebeat for Viacom/MTV’s non-profit. He also started Team GoRunners for Skechers and has been involved in other fundraising teams. JFW is all about community and giving. 10% of Joe fitness world annual income goes to various organizations nationally and internationally. Joel coined the term FITlantropy in 2009 while on a solo goodwill tour in Rio de Janiero where he spent 2 weeks creating fitness workouts and running clinics at orphanages. Over the course of his 37 years in business, he’s donated over $100,000 to charitable organizations. And has collaborated with other fitness professionals to raise over $10 million dollars.
